CHINA GROVE – Antique collectors will soon have a new place to look for treasures.

Vintage Grove at 303 N. Main Street in China Grove will open August 25.

Jody and Tracy Gladstone bought the old Grove Theater to run their business, which has taken the past two years to bring to life. After the theater closed in 1955, it served as an ice rink for a while before being closed again. Shoppers can expect to be greeted with a historic atmosphere when they enter the shop, which still has hardwood floors in the back that served as a skating rink.

Tracy Gladstone has been collecting antiques for five years, following her grandmother’s search for treasures.

“Honestly, I wish I had paid more attention to it when I was younger,” she said. “But now I have so many things in storage and my cabins. I like to share their stories.

Her husband agreed. Their two favorite aspects of selling antiques are sharing the story of each piece with customers.

Tracy started selling antiques a year and a half ago, first having stalls at the Lake Norman Antique Mall before moving her assortment to Main Street Antiques at the Mill. She still has a stand, number D26.

She had the opportunity to open her first boutique after Jody opened Mattress by Appointment at the back of the building. It used to carry goods before going down with COVID-19. Due to long-term effects on his health, he had to quit that job and decided to open his mattress business, which started operations earlier this month.

“It worked perfectly,” he said. “I was already there, so she just moved in front.”

Tracy refurbishes antiques that she and her husband collect. They source many pieces from Goodwill, thrift stores, estate sales and auctions. Sometimes, if they’re lucky, they find pieces on the side of the road after someone decides to throw them away. After some renovations, the items are ready to be put in store.

She also evaluates everything by researching and comparing prices to the brand of the item or what is similar to the era it comes from.

Vintage Grove held a soft opening on Farmers Day when people were able to tour inside the store. Vintage Grove’s Facebook page drew 200 followers a day, so Jody called it a success.

The store will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with closing times not yet finalized.

They will observe the traffic in the store and then make the final decision.
