FOR THE STAR
UpValley Family Centers is looking for volunteer tutors to support elementary, elementary, and middle school students in St. Helena and Calistoga Elementary.
In partnership with St. Helena Unified School District and Calistoga Unified School District, UVFC coordinates a volunteer tutoring program to bring community volunteers into local schools, supporting St. Helena students from kindergarten through 8th grade and K-12 Calistoga students. 6.
“This is a great opportunity for adults interested in supporting young students with general learning activities and who have time to help out during the school day,” said Jenny Ocon, executive director of UpValley Family Centers. “Students, teachers and schools have been through a lot during the pandemic, and volunteers are making a big difference by lending a helping hand.”
Tutoring will take place on campus during class hours at participating schools. Volunteers can work with students one-on-one, in groups, or in a classroom setting for general support based on student and teacher needs. Topic will vary, including but not limited to reading, writing, math, and social skills. Volunteers are encouraged to commit at least one hour per week on a recurring basis throughout the school year.

“I have found helping students with homework and helping teachers in the classroom rewarding,” said Christine Hayne, a long-time volunteer tutor. “Working one-on-one with a student has allowed me to see the benefits of tutoring as the student improves throughout the year. I recommend volunteering as a tutor for anyone interested.
Anyone interested in volunteering can complete the volunteer interest form at upvalleyfamilycenters.org/volunteer. All new guardians will receive an orientation and be asked to complete district-specific volunteer requirements, including paperwork, background checks, and TB screening or testing, and provide a copy of their COVID vaccination card -19 and their driver’s license.
